Three levers of penetration

Jean dye transfer — three penetration levers

Nastavte podmínky a uvidíte, kdy indigo začne pronikat do PU clearcoatu kůže. Vyšší tření, teplo a vlhkost penetraci umocňují.

INTERVENTION — likely transfer

Intervention

The combination of friction and heat/humidity begins opening PU pores for indigo penetration. Fresh staining (within 24 h) is removed with Interior Cleaner. Without coating, an indigo layer accumulates over months.

Penetrace indiga38 %

Move the sliders. Scores above ~65 % mean dye is in the pigment layer, not just surface.

Problem mechanics

1. Friction when sitting and entering

Entering in jeans creates local pressures ~10–30 kPa with tangential motion. That disrupts topcoat at molecular scale and opens micropores for dye.

Indigo (and other oxazine dyes) on cotton is mechanically held in the fiber, not covalently. Friction releases microcrystals that seek a new surface.

2. Heat and humidity amplify

At 28 °C cabin temperature penetration is ~3× faster than at 18 °C. PU thermally expands, micropores open, polymer is “softer” for dye molecules.

Humidity 60–80 % further opens hygroscopic structures in PU clearcoat — why a long hot summer drive shows marks in hours, while dry winter cabins stay clean for months.

3. Vulnerability by leather type

Leather typeRiskReason
Anilinevery highno topcoat, indigo into dermis
Semi-anilinehighthin ~25 µm topcoat
Pigmentedmedium50 µm PU + pigment barrier
Pigmented + coatinglowcoating as sacrificial layer
Synthetic (PU)low–mediumsmooth, non-porous dermis

Even pigmented leather is not immune if the driver wears raw dark indigo jeans daily over long distances.

Timeline — DIY vs studio

Fresh stain (under 24 h)

Indigo is on PU surface + shallow pores.

Fresh stain — DIY

  1. Damp towel with warm water

Lightly damp clean microfiber. Circles from edge inward so dye does not spread.

  2. Interior Cleaner

Two sprays on towel (not on seat), repeated circles. Blot with clean water between until towel stops blue.

  3. Full rinse and dry

Clean damp towel, then dry. Fully dry within an hour — moisture keeps dye active in PU.

  4. No heat

Do NOT use hair dryer, steam, or hot towel. Heat opens PU pores and drives indigo deeper.

Older stain (24 h – 14 days)

Indigo is in upper PU. DIY may fail:

  • Mild cases: Interior Cleaner + bonnet pad, 2–3 cycles.
  • Persistent blue cast: studio with solvent top remover (e.g. Gliptone Liquid Dye top remover) and controlled steam bonnet heat.

Old stain (over 14 days)

Indigo is in the pigment layer. Cleaning cannot extract it without stripping PU.

  • Studio: partial PU strip + pigment retouch + local PU clearcoat.
  • Cost: roughly €60–160 per seat by area.

Prevention — FEYNLAB® Leather Coating as sacrificial layer

Coating on pigmented leather is not 100 % indigo-proof but changes mechanics:

  • Hydrophobic surface — sweat and moisture do not drive dye in.
  • Coating is non-porous to indigo — fresh stain stays on top and wipes off easily.
  • Coating wears instead of PU — annual top-up.

Economics: seat coating vs one-seat retouch risk — for daily drivers in dark jeans, coating is the obvious choice.

Takeaways

  • Indigo is mechanical penetration, not a chemical stain — friction and heat amplify it.
  • Fresh under 24 h: Interior Cleaner saves ~90 % of cases.
  • Older: studio with solvent top remover.
  • Coating prevention: best economics for jeans daily drivers.
