Three decision criteria

- Three criteria for choosing DIY vs certified installation.

DIY vs professional studio is not “better vs worse” but a trade-off between cost, result certainty, and vehicle value. Here is a practical split.
Three decision criteria
1. Paint condition at application time
Coating is only as good as the substrate. Swirls, holograms, water spots, or fallout need correction before coating — otherwise defects are locked in for 3–5 years.
- New or near-new (~1 year, garaged) — thorough decon and final degrease. Advanced DIY can handle this.
- Daily driver 2+ years — often needs at least one-step correction (A500 class). DIY with a DA polisher is possible; outcome depends on skill.
- Visible defects under sharp light — multi-step correction (Compound → Polish → Refine), often rotary. DIY hits limits quickly.
2. Product line
FEYNLAB® portfolio is split by application risk:
| Line | Who applies | Why |
|---|---|---|
| True Series (V3, Heal Lite) | DIY and studio | Longer flash, wider temp/RH tolerance |
| Protection Series (Ultra, Self Heal Plus) | Certified studio only | Shorter window, environment sensitive |
| Signature Series (Pro Topcoat, Detailer) | Studio | Special chemistry, stacked with base |
True Series is designed for careful enthusiasts at home. Protection and Signature have narrow windows where “great” vs “ruined” can be 30 seconds of timing.
3. Result value and economics
Correction + Ceramic V3 DIY ≈ 5–8 hours and ~€120–160 chemistry. Studio for similar scope: €600–1,200+, but you get:
- 3–5 year warranty with FEYNLAB® service record.
- Controlled environment (climate box, IR, RH).
- Studio lighting — defects you miss at home.
- Studio carries failure risk, not you.
Under ~€16k purchase price, DIY often makes sense. Above ~€32k, time + error risk strongly favors studio. Between is a gray zone combining all three criteria.

Real DIY limits
Home application is a valid choice with clear boundaries:
- Most DIY users lack a paint thickness gauge. Without it you work blind — deep defects belong in a studio.
- Rotary in beginner hands is the fastest path to burned clearcoat. If unsure, stay on DA/orbital.
- Deep scratches, chips, chemical damage — not DIY or Protection territory. Body shop restoration.
- Self-healing has a narrower window than True Series. When in doubt, choose passive chemistry and leave self-heal to Certified Studio.
Hybrid path: DIY + studio as partners
- Home prep — careful washing, decon, maintenance between studio visits.
- Studio every 1–2 years for inspection, topcoat refresh, light correction if needed.
- DIY between visits — Pure Wash, drying aid, Detailer for routine care.
DIY saves routine money; studio handles controlled-environment work.
Takeaways
- DIY is legitimate for newer cars, True Series, and careful applicators.
- Protection and Signature belong in certified studios — narrow windows, higher error cost.
- Vehicles above ~€32k often favor studio even for simpler jobs.
- Hybrid maintenance + studio key phases is often the best long-term economics.
