Ceramic Wheel & Caliper — dwell, flash, and microclimate
Wheel ceramic mastery comes down to patience during dwell and awareness of what humidity and temperature do right now. Too short = poor leveling. Too long = high spots that are hard to fix. Rainy April behaves nothing like calm May.

Dwell a flash window pro Wheel & Caliper
Posuvníky vlhkosti a teploty řídí, jak dlouho po nanesení vrstvy potřebujete leveling a kdy nejpozději aplikovat druhou vrstvu.
Optimal window
OptimumAmbient 10–30 °C and RH below 75% is the sweet spot. Standard dwell, full flash window for the second coat.
RH and temperature sliders set recommended dwell and second-coat flash window. Note how RH above 75 % shortens everything and 75–90 cm under a lamp is the sweet spot.
What Ceramic Wheel & Caliper is
FEYNLAB® Ceramic Wheel & Caliper is a single-component ceramic coating at ~70 % solids, designed for wheels and calipers. After cure it forms a 1–2 µm film with heat resistance for brake duty and hydrophobicity against brake dust.
Key parameters:
- Solids: ~70 % (higher than most paint coatings).
- Film: 1–2 µm cured.
- Service life: ~1 year normal use.
- Heat resistance: adequate for typical road brake systems.
Prep before application
The wheel must be:
- Mechanically decontaminated — clay or decon mitt for bonded grime.
- Chemically decontaminated — iron remover for fallout.
- Degreased — FEYNLAB® Panel Prep or isopropyl alcohol for wax/oil residue.
- Dry — no water trapped in barrel cavities.
Trapped water evaporating during dwell causes local haze.
Application protocol
Step 1: Shake 2 min, breath 1 min
Shake the bottle 2 minutes (homogenize solids/pigment), open and “breathe” 1 minute (release pressure). Skipping this yields uneven mix on the pad.
Step 2: Applicator
Suede in block applicator, 4–6 drops per section. Cross-hatch by sections (not whole wheel at once).
Step 3: Dwell
Standard dwell 25–30 min. NEVER over 40 min — coating enters hard phase and leveling stops.
Dwell drivers:
- RH > 75 % shortens dwell 5–10 min (faster flash).
- Temperature outside 10–30 °C shortens dwell (outside spec window).
- Draft speeds flash but adds contamination risk.
After 25–30 min, level with clean suede. If it drags, you waited too long — shorten next section.
Step 4: Second coat
Second coat within 1–3 h of first (ideal microclimate). RH > 75 % or temp > 30 °C → window shrinks to 1–2 h.
Outside window: second coat will not covalently bond — acts like a topcoat. Life drops.
Step 5: Final cure
- 24 h — no water.
- 7 days — no aggressive chemistry (Tire Cleaner, iron remover, alkaline APC).
- FEYNLAB® Detailer after 2–4 h from last coat for quick gloss — not earlier.
Microclimate in practice
| Condition | RH | Temp | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Optimum | 40–75 % | 15–25 °C | ~28 min dwell, full flash window |
| Dry winter | 30–50 % | 8–14 °C | Longer dwell, IR recommended |
| Humid summer | 75–95 % | 22–32 °C | Shorter dwell, smaller sections |
| Wet spring | 80–95 % | 8–14 °C | Marginal — IR or reschedule |
IR curing
IR shortens cure from 24 h to ~15 min at 60 °C, 75–90 cm distance. Physics: controlled solvent evaporation from film depth — no solvent pop, no substrate overheating. More in the linked article.
Common mistakes
Takeaways
- Wheel & Caliper: high solids → safe 1–2 µm film per coat.
- Dwell 25–30 min sweet spot; never over 40 min.
- Second coat 1–3 h after first (RH/temp shrink window).
- IR: 60 °C / 15 min / 75–90 cm.
- 24 h no water / 7 days no chemistry / Detailer after 2–4 h.
