What the mechanical phase addresses
After chemistry, some contamination remains mechanically bonded (oxidised particles, baked-on film). Clay media with lubrication shear off a thin layer of contaminant, not paint.
Marring
Even with lubrication, friction occurs. If media is too aggressive, pressure is too high, or glide is insufficient, unidirectional micro-scratches (marring) form. On dark paints they show immediately.
Media comparison
| Medium | Aggressiveness | Control | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clay bar | medium | high | classic; regularly fold to a clean face |
| Clay towel | higher | medium | speed on large areas |
| Clay pad (DA) | highest | lower | experienced users only; overheating and hop risk |
Safe clay rules
- Never without enough lubricant (e.g. Prime).
- Light pressure, linear passes, frequent check by hand and lighting.
- After completion neutralise residue and move to final degreasing.
When to stop
If the surface stays rough after one round of chemistry + clay, it may be paint damage or industrial fallout — consider studio work and paint thickness measurement.
