Why micro-defects form

Why micro-defects form

Fine swirl marks and holograms typically arise from contact with abrasive trapped in the medium (mitt, towel). The source is usually wrong step order, dirty water, or repeated passes over an already contaminated panel.

Touchless (pre-wash)

Active foam followed by high-pressure rinse removes a large share of loose mud, dust, and some organics. It is important prevention before the contact step.

Limit: electrostatically and mechanically bound traffic film, dried insect residue, and some minerals will not fully release without agitation and suitable chemistry. Touchless is therefore not a full substitute for contact washing.

Two-bucket method (Two-Bucket)

Interactive diagram

Two buckets vs. one — where does dirt end up?

Use the slider to simulate panels washed and toggle between modes. Didactic only — real behaviour depends on hose setup, soil level, and Grit Guard quality.

Grit Guard working

Dirty water drops below the grid in B; bucket A stays the cleaner working bath.

A — SHAMPOO

Working bath

B — RINSE

Clean water to rinse the mitt

White grains = abrasive particles from the paint

  1. Bucket A — water with shampoo (working solution).
  2. Bucket B — clean water to rinse the mitt after each panel or each pass (depending on contamination).

Bucket B should have a Grit Guard or similar grid — when rinsing, rub the mitt against the bottom above the grid so particles settle below the protected zone and do not return to the fibres.

Common myth

Two containers alone solve nothing if you do not systematically rinse the mitt. Without that, abrasive particles return to bucket A and then to the paint.

Transparent buckets and ergonomics

Visual inspection of dirty water in bucket B reduces the risk of washing with contaminated media. A rolling bucket dolly speeds work around the vehicle.

Key takeaways

  • Touchless pre-wash lowers mechanical load but does not replace contact washing — bound traffic film will not disappear without agitation.
  • Two buckets work only with disciplined mitt rinsing in bucket B over a Grit Guard.
  • Transparent buckets let you see when rinse water is too dirty to continue.
