Two isocyanate types, two fates

- Why aromatic TPU (MDI/TDI) yellows after a few years while aliphatic (HDI) stays transparent for a decade.

PPF yellowing is not a cosmetic flaw — it is chemical breakdown of the polymer matrix. It is also the simplest quality test you can verify: look at PPF on a specific car three, five, or eight years after install. The dramatic gap between “bad” and “good” film comes down to which isocyanate was used to make the TPU.
Two isocyanate types, two fates
TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) forms from polyol and isocyanate reaction. As with ceramics, there are two main paths:
| Property | Aromatic (MDI / TDI) | Aliphatic (HDI) |
|---|---|---|
| Raw material cost | Low (1×) | High (3–5×) |
| UV stability | Poor | Excellent |
| Yellowing in 5 years | Visible, ΔE > 5 | Not visible, ΔE < 1.5 |
| Typical use | Construction, cheap PPF | Premium PPF, automotive top coat |
MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) and TDI (toluene diisocyanate) are aromatic — the molecule contains benzene rings. HDI (hexamethylene diisocyanate) is aliphatic — only a straight carbon chain.
That difference decides how the film looks after five years.
What happens when UV meets an aromatic ring
Interactive UV exposure
Why cheap PPF yellows — aromatic vs aliphatic TPU
Zvolte typ TPU a posuvníkem nastavte roky UV expozice. Aromatické báze (MDI/TDI) tvoří chinony, alifatické (HDI) zůstávají stabilní i po dekádě.
Aliphatic TPU after long exposure
StableAfter 5+ years, visible yellowing below 5%. Anti-yellowing chemistry keeps PPF Flex within dual warranty: 10-year structural + 4-year cosmetic.
An aromatic ring absorbs a UV photon very efficiently. Photon energy (~4 eV for UV-A 320 nm) is enough to break bonds in the aromatic ring and create a reactive free radical. Reaction chain:
- UV photon cleaves C–H in aromatic ring → benzyl radical.
- Oxygen from air attaches → peroxide.
- Peroxide decomposes to quinone (cyclic ketone with C=O double bonds).
- Quinone is a chromophore — absorbs visible light in the blue region (~430 nm), passing yellow to orange.
Accumulation of quinones in the film = gradual yellowing. On cheap aromatic PPF this shows in 2–3 years as a warm yellow cast; after 5+ years as a clearly visible “beer bottle” look in sun.
Gas fading — second cause
Cheap aromatic PPF contains BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) as antioxidant. BHT protects the film in storage, but with NOx (nitrogen oxides from exhaust) exposure BHT oxidises to its own chromophore.
A city-driven car yellows faster than a rural car — even at equal UV. That is gas fading. Aliphatic PPF Flex does not need BHT (nothing left to protect chemically); gas fading does not apply.
QUV test: how the lab predicts 10 years in 1000 hours
QUV (quartz UV chamber) is standard accelerated exposure. Sample cycles through:
- 8 h UV-A 340 nm at 60 °C (solar UV spectrum).
- 4 h condensation at 50 °C (dew and humidity).
Intensity 0.68–0.89 W/m² at 340 nm ≈ ~7× acceleration vs Florida sun (Florida = automotive reference). 1000 h QUV ≈ 7000 h Florida sun ≈ 9 years real exposure on Czech streets (less sun than Florida, ~1100 h solar irradiance / year).
| QUV hours | Real exposure (~CZ) | Aliphatic TPU must |
|---|---|---|
| 0 h | Day 0 | No change |
| 250 h | ~2 years | ΔE < 0.5 (eye cannot tell) |
| 500 h | ~4.5 years | ΔE < 1 |
| 1000 h | ~9 years | ΔE < 1.5 (premium PPF spec limit) |
| 1500 h | ~13 years | ΔE < 2.5 (end of guaranteed life) |
FEYNLAB® Flex passes 1000+ h QUV at ΔE under 1.5 — technical translation of “10-year structural warranty”.
ΔE (delta E) is colour difference in CIELab space. ΔE = 1 is human detection threshold. ΔE = 3 is “someone notices”. ΔE = 5 is “everyone sees it”.
Practical checks in the studio
To verify a specific PPF before install, indirect indicators help:
- Manufacturer datasheet must state aliphatic TPU explicitly. “Polyurethane” or “aromatic-aliphatic blend” only is a warning.
- 1000 h QUV test in the technical sheet — manufacturer should give ΔE after 1000 h. “Passed” alone — ask for the number.
- Reference install 5+ years old. Applicator with real portfolio shows how film looks in practice.
- 10-year warranty is only paper — what matters is who honours it. FEYNLAB® warranty runs through official distributor with a real claims process.
ΔE < 1.5 / 1000 h QUV
premium PPF standard
~9 years real exposure in CZ. Cheap aromatic films end at ΔE 5–10.
What to do when PPF already yellows
If your PPF yellows (typically 3–5 years on cheap aromatic film), no “polish” or “restoration” product fixes it — yellowing is chemical degradation inside the matrix, not surface oxidation.
Options:
- Warranty claim. If warranty applies and installer is available, yellowing in warranty period = PPF replacement.
- Reinstall. Remove old PPF (IR heat 60–70 °C eases PSA removal), clean PSA residue with Panel Prep, apply new aliphatic film.
- Live with it. Cheapest option — wait for next respray/refinish; until then PPF still protects even if aesthetics fail.
Key points
- Yellow PPF = aromatic TPU. Not an application defect — material chemistry failure.
- PPF price largely reflects raw material — aliphatic isocyanate is 3–5× costlier than aromatic. “Half-price cheap PPF” almost always has aromatic base.
- 1000 h QUV ≈ 9 years on Czech streets. Quality PPF must pass at ΔE < 1.5.
- After yellowing no “polishing cream” helps — chemistry is broken inside TPU.
