Cross-section: four layers in one composite

- What PPF Flex is made of layer by layer and why order matters.

PPF (paint protection film) is one of the most misunderstood detailing products. It looks like one film; in reality it is a multilayer composite where each layer has a specific function. FEYNLAB® Flex has four active layers plus a removable liner — together 7.6 mil ≈ 193 µm, roughly twice human hair thickness.

Thermoplastic polyurethane — structural matrix

Primary mechanical protection. Aliphatic TPU (HDI) with elongation >200%. Absorbs stone impacts and retains shape after flex.

Layer order top to bottom (viewing through film toward body):

  1. TRT topcoat (~0.4 mil ≈ 10 µm) — optical and self-healing layer.
  2. TPU body (~6.4 mil ≈ 163 µm) — structural polyurethane matrix.
  3. PSA adhesive (~0.6 mil ≈ 15 µm) — pressure-sensitive adhesive.
  4. Liner (~0.2 mil ≈ 5 µm) — polyethylene backing, removed just before application.

Liner is not in the finished install — it only protects PSA during manufacture and handling. Active layers are three: TRT, TPU, PSA.

TRT topcoat: self-healing and hydrophobic interface

TRT (Thermal Recovery Top) is the thinnest layer but does two jobs:

  • Hosts self-healing behaviour. Viscoelastic polymers in TRT have memory bonds. After mechanical scoring (e.g. dry towel scratch), the mesh returns to shape at ~50–60 °C — sun or warm water is enough. Micro-scratches in the topcoat fade within minutes.
  • Forms the optical interface to air. TPU body alone has refractive index 1.55, glass 1.52. TRT polyurethane-acrylate copolymer 1.49 — the composite stack makes PPF a true “invisible protection” with minimal parasitic reflection.

Hydrophobic final layer (e.g. silane) sits on TRT, not on TPU — so it is designed for this substrate. Ceramic PPF & Vinyl V3 targets TRT chemistry directly.

Sun on bumper, warm bucket water, pro IR lamp — all sufficient.

TPU body: structural backbone

TPU body is 96 % of composite mass. Thermoplastic polyurethane from aliphatic isocyanate HDI (hexamethylene diisocyanate) — aliphatic means no aromatic benzene rings that would oxidise in UV. That is why FEYNLAB® Flex stays transparent after ten years of exposure (more in Why cheap PPF yellows — aromatic vs aliphatic TPU).

Key physical properties of TPU body:

ParameterFEYNLAB® FlexMeaning
Thickness6.4 mil ≈ 163 µm~2× sheet of paper
Elongation at break>200 %Stretches to double length without break
Tensile strength≥ 35 MPaResistance to highway stone chips
Toughness≥ 100 MJ/m³Ability to absorb kinetic energy

When a stone hits PPF (5 mm, 100 km/h, ~1.4 J kinetic energy), TPU body elastically deforms — energy disperses in the polyurethane mesh instead of into paint. Paint under PPF stays intact; film returns elastically to flat.

PSA adhesive: permanent yet reversible

PSA (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) is acrylic adhesive working on “touch = adhesion”. Not solvent-dry glue, not UV cure — finger or plastic squeegee pressure is enough for a strong bond.

PSA specifics on PPF Flex:

  • 15 µm thickness balances strong bond (more adhesive) and easier removal (more adhesive = more residue on paint).
  • Pressure activation. PPF is first laid in slip solution (soap mix), then water is squeezed out with a plastic squeegee. Water allows positioning; pressure activates PSA.
  • Reversibility up to ~3 years. PSA is designed so PPF can be removed (collision, accident, panel replacement) without paint damage. After 3–5 years PSA cross-links enough that removal is possible but needs heat (IR to 60 °C).

After application wet-out continues 24–72 h — water from slip solution diffuses through TPU away; adhesion rises from ~30 % to ~95 % final value.

Liner: removable backing film

Polyethylene liner protects PSA from dust, water, and contact between manufacture and install. Installer removes liner just before placing PPF on the car — typically with masking tape holding PPF on the panel while liner peels toward the opposite edge.

Liner is not in the finished job. If you see “PPF peeling in multiple layers”, that is TRT delamination from TPU (chemical defect or extreme UV ageing on cheap aromatic films), not a forgotten liner.

Dual warranty: structural 10 years, cosmetic 4 years

FEYNLAB® Flex has two independent warranty levels covering different failure types:

WarrantyTermCovers
Structural10 yearsTPU cracking, layer delamination, loss of self-healing
Cosmetic4 yearsYellowing, loss of optical clarity, TRT topcoat hydrophobicity

The split reflects chemical reality. Structural TPU properties change little — aliphatic HDI chemistry is extremely stable in UV and ozone. Cosmetic TRT properties (hydrophobicity, optical clarity) are more sensitive to surface contamination and gradually decline even when the film structurally holds.

Key points

  • PPF Flex is three active layers, not one. Each addresses a different plane: optics (TRT), impacts (TPU), adhesion (PSA).
  • 10-year structural warranty comes from aliphatic TPU chemistry. Cheap aromatic films begin failing at 3–5 years.
  • Self-healing is not permanent — TRT topcoat wears and after 4–6 years loses part of memory bonds. Hence 4-year cosmetic warranty.
  • PSA application needs 48 h quiet. Slip solution must diffuse out and adhesion must mature.
