What pressurised water does to a PPF edge

8 minEstimated reading time — roughly how many minutes it takes to read at a normal screen pace.

- Why pressure washing can lift PPF edges and where the safety limit is.

A car with PPF is washed differently than one without. Not because film is fragile — structurally it is tougher than paint. But PPF has edges, and edges are where washing splits into “no problem” and “you lose €800 of protection”.

Pressure washing on PPF: safe angles and distances

Safe zone

Safe

Distance ≥ 1 m, angle parallel to the PPF edge. A 40° fan nozzle distributes pressure over a larger area; kinetic energy at the PSA edge is below the delamination threshold. Safe to wash the entire car here.

Cavitation is physics of tiny bubbles: when pressurised water hits a PPF edge at a sharp angle, low pressure behind the edge creates micro air bubbles. When flow moves on and pressure normalises, bubbles collapse with extreme local pressure (hundreds of MPa over micrometres).

That localised force attacks exactly the PSA–paint interface, the weakest bond. After dozens of repeats (weekly wash season) edge lift appears — PPF edge gradually peels from paint.

Second mechanism is pure kinetic energy. 150 bar nozzle at 30 cm on a PPF edge ≈ 12 MPa. Acrylic PSA adhesive strength ~5–8 MPa in ideal conditions. Water pressure exceeds adhesion → edge lifts.

Safe parameters for everyday washing

ParameterValueMeaning
Max pressure100–150 barHigher pressure = higher risk, no wash benefit
Min distance1 m (36 inch)Below 1 m kinetic energy grows with 1/r²
Spray angle40° fanSpreads pressure over larger area
Angle to edge≥ 30°NEVER perpendicular to PPF edge
Temperature35–60 °C maxAbove 60 °C activates TRT topcoat — deformation risk

40° fan nozzle is standard. Narrower (25° or 0° turbo) concentrates pressure to a point — forbidden on PPF. Turbo 0° stream causes structural PSA damage even on premium film.

≥ 1 m

safe nozzle distance

Below 30 cm and perpendicular to edge, edge lifts in seconds even on premium PPF.

Rules for each body area

  • Bumpers. Most sensitive. Many edges (grille, lights, fog lights, outlines). Minimum 1 m, parallel to edges, never from the side.
  • Hood. Flat = safe. Frame edge = caution, parallel.
  • Doors and sills. Door edges and handles are risk zones. Sill may have film tucked under rubber — pressure at film–rubber junction damages both.
  • Mirrors and A-pillar. Complex 3D edges — handle by hand with microfiber, not pressure.
  • Rear door / boot. Edge around plate and badge = pressure zone for PSA. Distance and parallel motion.

General rule: nozzle perpendicular to edge lifts PPF. Nozzle parallel to edge flows over film.

Clean water vs winter salt rinse

In winter Czech water often has pH 7.5–8.2 from road salt. Brine does not chemically harm PPF (TPU is inert), but:

  1. PSA at edges can degrade with long salt exposure — winter rinse with clean water flow (not pressure washer perpendicular).
  2. Wax / sealant on paint under PPF dissolves in alkaline brine. If PSA loses adhesion in winter, water enters under edge and finds unprotected paint.

Winter rule: weekly rinse with clean water flow, not pressure. If you must use pressure, not perpendicular to edges and at least 1 m distance.

Wash chemistry: foam, shampoos, dilution

PSA edges are also sensitive to alkaline cleaners (pH > 9). Cheap car-wash foams often pH 11–13, aggressive to PSA with repeat use.

Dilution rules for FEYNLAB® Pure Wash (pH-neutral shampoo):

UseDilutionApplication
Foam (foam cannon)1–2 oz / 1 L waterApply, wait 2–3 min, rinse
Two buckets1 oz / 2–3 gal waterStandard wash mitt
Spot cleaning1 oz / 0.5 L waterLocal dried spots

1 oz ≈ 30 ml. “2 oz / L foam” = 60 ml shampoo per 1 L water, 6 % solution. Pure Wash is concentrated — dilution matters more than volume.

Brush automatic washes: absolute ban

Classic brush automatic wash (rotating rollers) is death for PPF:

  • Brush catches PPF edge = prying PSA off paint. At 100+ rpm and several kg on the edge, PPF lifts in minutes.
  • Recirculated water contains abrasive particles from previous cars (sand, soot, tar) — brush embeds them in TRT topcoat like sandpaper.
  • Drying wipers tend to drag PPF with them.

Touchless automatic is technically possible, but internal nozzles are often perpendicular to PPF edges. If you must use a wash, hand wash or professional studio only.

Key points

  • 100–150 bar, 1 m, 40° fan, parallel to edges. Four parameters that keep PPF on the car.
  • Edges are the only weak point — centre section is structurally stronger than paint below.
  • Winter salt rinse with flow, not pressure. Pure Wash dilution 1–2 oz / L.
  • Brush automatic once = destroyed edges.
