Clear coat is not a “smooth pane of glass”

Clear coat is not a “smooth pane of glass”

Factory clear coat has microstructure — pores and irregularities at the microscopic level. FEYNLAB® nanotechnology coatings use this topography: active components penetrate the paint structure and form a stable network that adds chemical resistance and controlled water behaviour (beading / sheeting).

What damages the illusion of quality

Many everyday car shampoos and “quick detailers” add polymers, waxes, or optical fillers. They temporarily boost gloss and droplet glide, but they also:

  • mask the true condition of the coating and hydrophobicity,
  • build a thin film that blocks consistent protection behaviour,
  • can interfere with prep before applying a new layer.

For coating condition diagnostics and pre-installation prep, the goal is a purist clean surface without these additives.

Hydrophobicity and surface tension

The self-cleaning effect (droplets carrying fine dirt as they sheet off) depends on contact angle and interface cleanliness. A silicone or wax “band-aid” changes the water–paint interface, so wash results no longer reflect what is stored in the ceramic matrix.

Practical takeaway

Before application or a deep condition check, use shampoos and cleaners formulated to not deposit fillers and to leave the paint ready for the next stage after rinse — see articles on Pure Wash and Panel Prep.

Key points

  • Clear coat has micropores — that is a requirement, not a defect; protective chemistry needs porous topography for a 3D bond network.
  • Filler waxes and body fillers in car care mask coating condition and hydrophobicity.
  • For coating diagnostics, always clean the surface so you see real water behaviour, not an additive effect.
