Four defect types under PPF

- How to tell water vs air bubbles under PPF — they look alike, one fades, one does not.

PPF is alive — first weeks after install: wet-out continues, PSA cross-links, slip diffuses out. Milky pockets or bubbles under film are normal then. The question is not if but what it is and what to do. Wrong diagnosis = permanent defect; right diagnosis = calm 14-day wait.

Water bubble under PPF
evaporates in 7–14 daysSlip solution residue between PPF and paint. Water gradually diffuses out through the polymer — the film is permeable to small molecules. Summer: 3–7 days; winter: 10–14 days.
Solution:No intervention. Do NOT press or push — pressure deforms TPU before the water disappears (hard water bubble = permanent deformation). Observe for 14 days.
| Type | Source | Timeline | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water bubble | Residual slip solution | 7–14 days | Wait |
| Air bubble | Trapped air at install | Permanent | Push early; later inject |
| Contamination | Hair/dust between PPF and paint | Permanent | Peel-back, clean |
| Winter edge peel | Ice wedging at edge | Grows over time | IR + reactivation; later reinstall |
Key: water bubble is permeable (water diffuses through polymer); air and contamination are not (PSA blocks gas and solids).
Water bubble: wait and do not touch
After install, slip solution remains under film. Most water is squeegeed out; microscopic drops remain. In 24 h they shrink to milky-white dots.
Why they disappear:
- TPU is permeable to water (not air). Water diffuses out.
- Speed depends on temperature — summer 3–7 days, winter 10–14, high humidity up to 21 days.
- After evaporation, film bonds fully and the defect vanishes optically.
Hard water bubble: permanent
If a water bubble is pressed or overheated (bumper sun 60+ °C), PSA can cure around trapped water. Water cannot diffuse out; minerals remain as a permanent chalky mark.
Fix: peel-back section and reapply.
Air bubble: critical first 24 hours
Incomplete squeegee on curves leaves air. Looks like water, behaves differently:
- Air cannot diffuse through TPU. PSA is essentially gas-tight.
- Permanent without action. After two weeks not fading = air, not water.
| Age | Procedure |
|---|---|
| 0–24 h | Gloved finger pressure toward nearest edge + gentle IR (60 °C, 5 min) reactivates PSA |
| 1–7 days | Pro IR 60–70 °C + plastic card toward edge — mark risk |
| 7+ days | 25G needle — puncture, push out, add slip, IR, re-seat |
| >2 weeks | Often section reinstall — PSA cured around bubble |
25G (~0.5 mm) punctures TRT/TPU without visible scar — channel closes after slip. Never larger needle or knife — TRT is only 10 µm.
Contamination: hair, dust, insect
Unfiltered install (garage dust, installer lint, polish fallout) leaves solid particles under film — dark dot or line, does not move.
Fix = local peel-back:
- IR 60 °C on ~5 cm around defect.
- Lift PPF corner, expose PSA and paint.
- Remove contaminant (tweezers, tape, IPA wipe).
- Slip on PSA and paint.
- Re-seat + card + IR reactivation.
Hair near edge: sometimes 25G at edge pulls hair out. Center hair needs peel-back — length will not fit a point channel.
Winter edge peeling: ice wedging
Water under a poorly sealed PPF edge (hood corner, light IR on edge only) freezes and expands ~9 % volume.
1 ml water → ~1.09 ml ice. Ice pressure on the edge is 20–25 MPa, exceeding cold PSA adhesion.
Symptom: lifted edge Jan–Feb, often first winter after fall install. 1–3 mm delamination may be reversible; >5 mm needs section reinstall.
Prevention:
- Full IR edge activation — PSA bonded around full perimeter.
- Edge sealing with silane primer (
PPF & Vinyl V3) — hydrophobic barrier. - Edge inspection first two weeks — re-IR and card any lift.
Repair:
- 1–5 mm lift: IR 60 °C until PSA reactivates + card down. Trapped water dries; channel closes.
- >5 mm: peel section, Panel Prep on PSA residue, new PPF piece, full install.
9 % volume
water expansion on freeze
Same physics as burst pipes — water at a PPF edge does the same.
Takeaways
- Bubbles in first two weeks = water = wait. Do not press.
- Air bubbles: act within 24 h or plan 25G / reinstall.
- Never pressure-wash PPF edges in winter — freeze wedging lifts film.
- 25G needle and IR fix ~95 % of cases. Larger tools destroy TRT.
