TPU + plasticisers: why PPF is “soft”

Applying hard ceramic to PPF is like gluing glass to rubber. It works for a day or two, then cracks. Understanding why means understanding two different polymer philosophies — and choosing a coating that respects both.
TPU + plasticisers: why PPF is “soft”
PPF (paint protection film) is thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) with plasticisers — molecular “slip bars” that lower elastic modulus and increase stretch. Typical PPF has:
- Elastic modulus ~30 MPa (clear coat ~2,000 MPa — ~60× harder).
- Elongation 150–400 % before break.
- Self-healing top layer — micro-scratches fade with heat (~50–70 °C).
Vinyl is structurally similar but without self-healing and lower elasticity (modulus ~50 MPa, extension ~80–150 %).

Ceramic on PPF: standard vs PPF & Vinyl V3
Use the slider to set film bend level. PPF deforms in real use from heat, wash pressure, or opening doors. Watch what happens to the coating.
FEYNLAB® Czech Republic PPF & Vinyl V3 — flex-tolerant
ElasticTwo-component polymer (Step 1A + 1B, 15 g + 15 g) is tuned for elastic behavior. Respects plasticizers in PPF, forms an elastic network with 50+ % micro-elongation. The coating flexes with the film without cracking.
Under normal mechanical stress PPF deforms. Opening a door stretches the top edge of PPF slightly. Hand pressure when washing compresses the film. Sun heats the body and TPU expands thermally more than paint (~3× greater thermal expansion).
Standard silane ceramic on PPF:
- Cures as a rigid Si–O–Si network (modulus ~10 GPa).
- Under elastic deformation it has nowhere to go — network is stiff, TPU plasticisers below stretch → coating tears under tension.
- Micro-cracks appear within ~30 days (faster in summer, slower in winter rubbing).
- Hydrophobicity drops sharply; water enters cracks and oxidises PPF top layer.
Plasticisers also migrate to the surface over time. When coating sits only physically (TPU lacks silanol-like groups for standard Si–O–C covalent bond), plasticisers “push it off” from below like a film between PPF and coating. Pop-out — coating flakes off in sheets.
FEYNLAB® PPF & Vinyl V3: two-part elastic system
PPF & Vinyl V3 is formulated differently from classic ceramic. Mix-on-spot two-part chemistry:
| Component | Content | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1A | 15 g | Elastomer-rich polymer with flexible backbone |
| Step 1B | 15 g | Cross-link catalyst + plasticiser-tolerant additive |
Mixed 1:1 gives an elastic network with modulus ~50 MPa — orders of magnitude closer to TPU/vinyl than hard ceramic. Key properties:
- Micro-elongation 50+ % before break. PPF can stretch; coating goes with it.
- Plasticiser-tolerant chemistry — additive in Step 1B reacts with migrating plasticisers and incorporates them instead of pop-out.
- Hydrophobicity ~110° water contact angle, slightly lower than hard Ceramic V3 (~115–120°), traded for PPF lifespan.
- Pot life after mix: ~30 min. After that polymer gels in the bottle — unusable.
50 MPa
elastic modulus PPF & Vinyl V3
~200× lower than standard ceramic — why it does not break with TPU.
Leveling Aid: maintenance, not full protection
FEYNLAB® Leveling Aid is a softer, hydrophobic topcoat mainly for PPF and vinyl maintenance between full applications.
| Use | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Maintenance topcoat every 4–6 months | Yes, ideal use |
| Full protection instead of PPF & Vinyl V3 | No — hydrophobicity OK, but lacks structural cross-link with plasticisers |
Instead of Overcoat V3 on gloss ceramic | No — Leveling Aid is tuned for soft substrate |
| After small PPF damage repair | Yes, quick hydrophobicity restore |
Logic: PPF & Vinyl V3 once a year, Leveling Aid between.
Self Heal Plus under PPF: alternative strategy
FEYNLAB® Self Heal Plus applied on paint before PPF film works as base protection PPF does not damage (both share compatible polymer philosophy — elastic polyurethane networks).
Layering logic:
- Self Heal Plus on clean clear coat (covalent bond to paint).
- PPF over Self Heal Plus (PPF adhesive bonds better than direct to clear coat).
- PPF & Vinyl V3 on top (on PPF, for hydrophobicity and structural protection).
Three-layer system provides:
- Self Heal: micro-scratch recovery under PPF (possible PPF top micro-cracking fades).
- PPF: mechanical protection from chips and stones.
- PPF & Vinyl V3: hydrophobic top, UV and oxidation protection for PPF.
Standard for Pro segment vehicles (Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini) where long-term PPF pays off.
PPF Flex dual warranty
FEYNLAB® Flex has two independent warranty levels covering different failure modes:
- Structural warranty 10 years — covers TPU cracking, layer delamination, loss of self-healing. Based on aliphatic HDI isocyanate UV stability (unlike aromatic TPU that yellows — see Why cheap PPF yellows — aromatic vs aliphatic TPU).
- Cosmetic warranty 4 years — covers yellowing, loss of optical clarity, TRT topcoat hydrophobicity. Top layer has shorter life than structural TPU body.
Applying PPF & Vinyl V3 over TRT topcoat protects the cosmetic layer — hydrophobic topcoat slows TRT ageing and in practice extends cosmetic warranty life by 1–2 years.
PPF vs vinyl vs paint protection: which chemistry when
| Film type | Elastic modulus | Self-heal | Suitable coating |
|---|---|---|---|
| TPU PPF (Suntek, XPEL, STEK, …) | ~30 MPa, 150–400 % stretch | Yes (top layer) | PPF & Vinyl V3 |
| Vinyl wrap (3M, Avery, Hexis) | ~50 MPa, 80–150 % stretch | No | PPF & Vinyl V3 |
| PPF on matte paint / matte PPF | Same as TPU PPF | Variable | PPF & Vinyl V3 + studio compatibility check |
| Traditional “paint protection” (UV lacquers, acrylic) | 200–500 MPa | No | Standard Ceramic V3 / Ultra V2 works |
Rule: if the surface has stretch capability > 30 %, it is a soft polymer and needs elastic ceramic.
PPF & Vinyl V3 application (simplified)
PPF & Vinyl V3 application
Check PPF adhesion
Bend 90° with fingers — PPF must stay on paint. Fix PPF adhesion before coating.Pure Wash + Pure Rinseless
Pure Rinseless preferred on PPF — less mechanical pressure. No aggressive detergents.Iron chemical decontamination
Iron Out works on PPF. No clay — risk scratching self-heal top layer.Panel Prep double pass
First pass removes surface oil, second residual plasticisers from migration. 5 min reflash.Mix Step 1A + 1B (1:1)
15 g + 15 g, intensive mix in applicator bottle 30 seconds. Use within 30 min.Cross-hatch in small sections
PPF & Vinyl V3 flashes faster than standard ceramic — work 20 × 20 cm sections.Dwell 4–6 min, wipe-off
Pad → buff, perpendicular strokes. No third towel — elastic coating, third pass can remove layer.24 h no water, 7 days no chemical washes
Cross-link slower than hard ceramic — full cure in a week.
